Spare Lawyers for Refugees supports the works of organizations around Australia who share a common interest in providing free services to asylum seekers and refugees. Spare Lawyers for Refugees encourages those who cannot support us to offer assistance to the following organizations.
Spare Rooms for Refugees An affiliate of Spare Lawyers for Refugees, Spare Rooms provides a lay network of people who provide practical support to refugees and asylum seekers who have endured Australia’s mandatory detention policy. Spare Rooms supporters write letters, send supplies and may even host detainees after their release from immigration detention. The Justice Project The Justice Project has been formed to campaign for refugee policy reform and to campaign for the restoration of Human Rights in Australia. Its members include Julian Burnside, Malcom Fraser and Robert Manne. Public Interest Law Clearing House (PILCH) and the Victorian Bar Legal Assistance Scheme The Victorian Bar provides complimentary support to Spare Lawyers for Refugees. The Bar Legal Assistance Scheme provides an extensive service for the administration of legal claims through the court system in Victoria. Email. Refugee Advocacy Service of South Australia (RASSA) Better known as RASSA, this organization is a non-profit organization that provides free legal advice to asylum seekers currently being held in the Baxter Immigration Detention Facility 4 hours north of Adelaide. RASSA is affiliated with and compliments the work of Spare Lawyers for Refugees in the Adelaide region. For more information please visit or email. Australian Lawyers for Human Rights This organization is designed to provide a peak body for legal professionals advocating human rights in the domestic sphere. Refugee Immigration Legal Centre (RILC) Better known as RILC, this non-profit centre runs an efficient and effective legal and referral service for refugees in the Melbourne area. The Centre boasts a high reputation for compassionate and sensitive advice for refugees and refugee applicants from all over the world living in Melbourne. RILC also provides pro bono services to those refugee visa applicants being detained in the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Facility 20 minutes from central Melbourne. Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning Program Better known as the SAIL Program, this is a non-profit, volunteer-run, secular organization that provides free community services to Melbourne’s Sudanese refugee community. Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, Footscray The Asylum Seekers Resource Centre in Footscray provides a range of invaluable services to refugees and those who are currently in immigration detention. Their fantastic work spans across a range of vital areas including health care, legal assistance and resettlement. University of Melbourne Law School A link between Spare Lawyers and students from Melbourne University’s Law Faculty was forged during 2002 after it was suggested that the skills of law students could be utilised. Now a small, dedicated group plays a vital role in ensuring that asylum seekers referred to SLFR are found legal representation swiftly.
