Spare Lawyers for Refugees is a non-profit support and advocacy network for people held in Australian immigration detention centres. The "Spare Lawyers" are members of Australia's legal community who donate their time and expertise to assist asylum seekers to Australia.

A belief in the rule of law is fundamental to Spare Lawyers for Refugees. Founded by Julian Burnside QC, a Melbourne barrister, Spare Lawyers for Refugees has a support network of over 250 lawyers including barristers, solicitors and law students. Spare Lawyers for Refugees draws upon the strong culture of pro bono legal assistance of the Australian legal community. To join Spare Lawyers for Refugees as a volunteer, please click here.

This online advocacy centre for refugees and asylum seekers to Australia is dedicated to the memory of the 353 people (146 of them children) who died on 22 October 2001 aboard the vessel known only as 'Suspected Illegal Entry Vessel X' or SIEV X attempting to seek asylum in Australia.
